BAIONYX

Our

STory

BAIONYX was created from a simple but important realization: road traffic leaves more behind than most people think. Through close exposure to the automotive world and environmental innovation, our founder became aware of a problem that receives far less attention than it deserves - harmful particles from road runoff entering the aquatic environment. What began as insight quickly became direction. BAIONYX was established to bring practical particle retention solutions to the Nordic market and help turn environmental concern into concrete infrastructure action.

Mission & Vision

MISSION

Our mission is to help reduce harmful particles in road runoff through practical, scalable particle retention solutions that fit existing infrastructure.

VISION

Our vision is a future where better water protection can be achieved through smarter use of the infrastructure already in place.
Innovation & Testing

BAIONYX builds on years of testing, development and practical learning. Our work is rooted in the belief that environmental technology must function under real conditions - not only in theory. That means focusing on hydraulic performance, operational simplicity and measurable particle retention in existing drainage environments.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
BAIONYX addresses a pollution pathway that is often overlooked. Microplastics from tyre wear remain a major focus area, but they are part of a wider road-runoff challenge involving suspended solids and other harmful particles. By acting closer to the source, BAIONYX helps reduce the transport of pollution into downstream water systems.

CREDIBILITY
We believe environmental claims must be grounded in practical reality.

PRACTICALITY
Solutions must work in existing infrastructure and operationalroutines.

COLLABOATION
Progress happens through strong partnerships across sectors.

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT
We develop, test, learn and refine.
SUSTAINABILITY GOALS
BAIONYX supports cleaner water, more resilient urban environments and reduced pollutant transport from trafficked surfaces into the water environment.

The "Y" with the dot above in our logo carries a dual meaning. It symbolizes a filter with a raindrop above it, reflecting our dedication to purifying water and removing harmful particles like microplastics. Additionally, the "Y" represents choice and direction, showcasing our mission to address environmental challenges with precision and impact. Together, these elements embody BAIONYX's purpose and innovation.

"BAIO" refers to biology, the field in which our particle filters operate. The inclusion of "AI" highlights our ambition to integrate advanced technology in the future, enabling us to monitor various aspects of the water our filters interact with. "ONYX" refers to the black stone, renowned for its symbolic qualities such as protection, clarity, strength, and resilience - qualities that are also reflected in our filtration solutions.

Municipalities, road authorities and other owners of road-related drainage infrastructure are expected to be the primary customer group. Depending on the site, relevant users may also include ports, logistics areas, industrial operators, racetracks, airports and other paved environments with significant traffic loads.

That depends on drainage layout, traffic patterns, asset condition and the goals of the project. BAIONYX supports targeted implementation rather than assuming all assets need to be equipped in the same way.

Our filters are designed with sustainability in mind and have minimal environmental impact. They require only minimal energy and maintenance, and the collected particles can be managed through existing waste treatment systems, reducing the risk of negative environmental effects.

Our filter technology is developed to address the challenges that regular sewer systems cannot handle, such as very small particles. With our partners, including Audi Environmental Foundation, we have developed a solution that is not only effective but also practical to implement and maintain – providing immediate results after installation. Our solution is decentralized, meaning it does not require extensive roadworks. It can be quickly and cost-effectively installed in locations where its efficiency will have the greatest impact, making it an ideal choice for targeted and sustainable improvements.

Microplastics from tyre wear remain one of BAIONYX's main focus areas, but the solution is designed to help retain a broader range of harmful particles found in road runoff, including suspended solids and other unwanted materials transported by rainwater.

Both descriptions are relevant. 'Filter' is a useful plain-language term, while 'Particle Retention System' is the more precise description of how BAIONYX is positioned and developed as a practical infrastructure solution.

No. BAIONYX is designed to work within normal maintenance logic for existing road gullies, gully pots and sediment traps, helping keep implementation practical and operationally realistic.

A single filter can capture a significant amount of microplastics and other harmful particles that would otherwise end up in the aquatic environment. When many filters are installed across a city or area, the cumulative effect can have a substantial impact on water quality.

Our filter design is modular, making it easy to adapt to different infrastructures and needs. We seek to collaborate with local partners in each country to ensure smooth implementation and operation, making the solution scalable. The filters have a long service life thanks to their robust construction and choice of materials. Maintenance is simple and does not require frequent replacement. We also offer a maintenance plan to maximize efficiency and extend the filter's lifespan.

Our filters are produced in Germany with a focus on minimizing environmental impact throughout the process. We also work to use as many sustainable materials as possible and ensure that production is energy-efficient and responsible. Our partners production facilities in Germany reports according to the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD).

The solution is designed to preserve hydraulic function while supporting particle retention in the gully pot or sediment-trap area. The intention is to avoid unnecessary restriction of flow while improving local source control.

BAIONYX is not positioned as a substitute for other environmental measures. It is a practical addition to existing water-quality and runoff strategies, with a specific focus on an often overlooked pollution pathway from trafficked surfaces.

Our filter technology has been tested in both laboratories and in the field, including with the Technical University of Berlin. Test results show that up to 97% of total suspended solids are captured by the filter, demonstrating a high level of efficiency in reducing harmful particles.

Our solutions are designed with cost efficiency in mind and can help reduce long-term environmental costs, such as cleaning polluted water and biodiversity damage. Additionally, it is possible to attract support from environmental funds and CSR programs, which can assist with financing.

Microplastic from tires is one of the largest sources of microplastic pollution in urban areas. It is particularly problematic because it is difficult to capture and has a direct pathway into the aquatic environment through rainwater. The particles also contain potentially harmful chemicals that can negatively affect aquatic organisms – as documented in several studies on, among others, salmon life.

Our filters are designed not to affect the function of the sewer and require minimal maintenance. The intelligent design of the filters ensures that water flow is maintained even under high loads. We also offer a maintenance plan to ensure and monitor optimal performance.

As part of the annual inspection of the filter, we ensure that the collected materials are gathered and delivered for proper handling at wastewater treatment facilities, which are highly skilled in managing and treating wastewater responsibly.

Our filters add an important extra layer of protection by capturing many of the small, harmful particles that would otherwise end up in nature, making them essential for safeguarding our water resources. Another advantage of BAIONYX filters is that they are a decentralized solution, working effectively at the point of installation without requiring large-scale construction, road closures, or other costly measures for installation.
